Forecasting 2024: 10 Trends That Won’t Stand the Test of Time

The long-awaited season of summaries and predictions of upcoming trends in interior decoration, rankings of the best and worst decorations and what will be in and definitely out in the coming year is coming. While past trend lists are the ones we love to hate (you design your space for you, not for others or dictates), there’s no denying that some styles are at the peak of popularity while others are inexorably falling.

But make no mistake: if you still fall for one of the trends listed below, we’re in no way trying to dissuade you. It is up to you to decide what you will put aside in 2023, and what will take a new place in your interior in the months to come. Trends come and go, but sometimes the furniture you invest in will last you a lifetime. Discover our predictions for the decorating trends most likely to disappear in 2024.

The mania for concealment

Collectors of all kinds, rejoice. This year, the four corners of your interior will be graced with trinkets, precious objects and framed photos. Here we aim for shelves, walls and even the fridge, any available surface. Gone are the days of hiding your memories at the bottom of a drawer. We are moving away from bare storage and scrupulously organized minimalism to embrace spaces that encourage the evolution of collections and the arrangement of precious objects that bring comfort to our hearts. Large open spaces

Open space critics started 2020, but this year their crusade is taking a slightly different route. Many of the interiors presented on our pages in recent months have one thing in common: a small area. Has our generation finally decided that they don’t need a gigantic house with extra rooms that don’t have much use, or is the current situation forcing us to settle for small spaces? If a large area is a significant luxury, the installation of a comfortable and multi-purpose pod provides some comfort. Of course, we have work to do at the stove in the kitchen (with a superb Le Creuset set), but it is also the perfect room for gathering and sharing moments together. Why can’t our living room be turned into a makeshift gym? Who else reserves a guest room just for passing guests? Even young parents are embracing this new way of thinking. Regardless of the surface, home is synonymous with comfort and rest.

Beige, gray and gray

We haven’t seen such an attraction to warm, saturated colors since the 1970s? Abandonment of cold gray and shy beige colors, today ubiquitous in minimalist styles and atmospheres of country houses, in favor of rich and intense browns. Completely white spaces are decorated with colored walls, from the ceiling to the moldings, including all surfaces that can be painted. The trend is toward understated maximalism, a perfect example of this mid-century Oakland home designed by Arthur’s, the multidisciplinary practice of Nick Spain.

Wavy edges

Wavy furniture and objects – especially three-seaters or modular sofas – have exploded in recent years. One of our journalists even said that the trend will probably never dry up. We agree with her, but keep in mind that rounded details, including the edges of furniture, are gradually taking precedence in favor of more classic rounded lines. Why ? Shapes and curves are in fashion, a bit like bows in fashion. Evidence is a cherry-colored bathroom sink by artist Andy Dixon in Silver Lake and a shelf that spans the entire kitchen in a colorful Mexican apartment.

Long patterned carpets

We still love shaggy, patterned rugs, but monochrome, low-profile patterns will be decorating our homes in 2024. Jonathan Sanchez-Obias, owner of the Primaried agency, opted for midnight blue in his Miami home, while architect and designer Martin Massé chose more neutral rugs. shades, gray and cream colors. Do you want to be like them? Check out the new Armadillo or Nordic Knots rugs. In 2024, bold patterns will leave our floors and nestle on our walls and furniture.

Ladies

If the checkerboard is and will remain the favorite pattern of generation Z, the trend is somewhat on the wane. Plaid and stripes, on the contrary, are increasingly popular and are part of the revival of the Old Money style (“old luck” or “good family”, in French), a classic style that combines luxury and discretion. Checkerboards, however, have not completely disappeared: we are still fans of those that adorn Moroccan carpets, tiled bathrooms, but also the interiors of those who made this pattern famous before everyone else, such as journalist Sydney Gore from AD US.

Plants you can’t keep alive

Say goodbye to plants that are too complex. Yes, I’m referring to that magnificent olive tree that sits in your favorite influencer’s living room, but which you know full well won’t survive in your home. Don’t buy it (yes, it’s obvious, but many of us still get it wrong): it’s bad for the environment, your wallet and morale (if you’ve already killed a tree and witnessed its slow death, you know what I’m talking about). Last year, journalist India Roby already mentioned trends that vegetation should be abandoned.

Uncomfortable furniture

How many people have bought a very expensive sofa online without trying it on and finding it uncomfortable? There are thousands of them! Don’t fall for it and repeat after me: any design purchase must combine form and function. Feeling uncomfortable in your own home is unacceptable. Looking for a couch while living in a small space? Here are 8 creative solutions that will help you make the right choice.

Succumb to the trends

Some designer pieces are irresistible: their vision immediately arouses the desire to buy. Whether imitation or not, they are a sign of following the trends – think Murano mushroom lamp 2019, Ultrafragola mirror 2020, Togo sofa 2021 and Camaleonda sofa 2022. Now, not only are derivatives and imitations to be avoid for obvious reasons (they lose value immediately), but in general, the pieces you’re most proud of are the ones no one else owns, like a denim sofa. In a word: cherish your uniqueness.

Betrayal of the spirit of the place

Do you live in a modern building? Above all, don’t install false moldings: instead, combine stylish and contemporary furniture and objects. Is your room dark? You don’t have to try to make it brighter: paint your walls the same color. In 2024, we listen and embrace the spirit of the place. In other words, we stop pretending.
