Transforming an Old Two-Story Apartment into a Bright Family Living Space: Tips and Tricks

The living room perfectly illustrates the work of Studio Castilla in this 135 m² apartment: it brings light, warmth and personality without neglecting functionality.
Cassandra Favaro

Studio Castille renovated a 135 m² estate in Issy-les-Moulineaux. In the beginning: a space with potential. The result: a happy, well-equipped family apartment where life is good. To visit.

France and Mathilde are joyful, sweet and energetic. And the temperament of these two friends, who founded Studio Castille, permeates their creations. Inviting this couple for an interior design project means wanting subtle colors, light, sensuality, but also functionality. Because if Studio Castille has an optimistic and refined “leg”, it does not neglect a single detail related to circulation, storage, coexistence… In short, everything that makes everyday life much more pleasant and easier. Proof is this new project in Issy-les-Moulineaux that Mathilde presents to us.

Starting point

“This 135m² duplex apartment, located in a 1990s building in Issy-les-Moulineaux, was in pretty good condition with one good thing: its superb terrace. Although there were no major works, it was still a real labyrinth and was not designed according to the taste of our customers. Therefore, they wanted us to simplify the circulation and give it personality. Therefore, our choice was to barely touch the structure. We just added a laundry room instead of a bathroom, two small bathrooms and redesigned the second level to create a real space level dedicated to the parents. We mainly worked on improving the flow and functionality to make this apartment a pleasant place to live with the family. »

The kitchen

Before: a badly decorated kitchen.
Studio Castile

After: a more functional kitchen, but with the right personality.

Before: ideas but needs refreshing.
Studio Castile

After: open kitchen, but designed as a separate space that forms a link between the entrance and the living room.
Cassandra Favaro

“The kitchen is located as an extension of the entrance and the living room and is accessed from both sides. Initially, it was partitioned off, but still had an opening, a kind of opening, into the living room. We wanted to keep this idea and push it even further. So we built a semi-glass roof in this location and another over the entrance to circulate light and make this kitchen a room unto itself without being closed off. Since the lower part of the partitions is solid, we could, for example, install a small counter there, ideal for breakfast. Of course, we also completely redesigned the organization by optimizing storage and work space. We covered one of the walls that we can see from both the entrance and the living room with wallpaper to add a decorative touch.”

Living room

Before: a large, bright living room that deserves to be warmed up.
Studio Castile

After: repainted walls, a beautiful floor and the room, as well as the existing equipment, has a completely different look.
Cassandra Favaro

“The living room was special in that it had a beautiful ceiling height of 3.20 m, which is rare in this type of accommodation. So we wanted to improve it by choosing white, because colors tend to “pack” a bit. In one of the corners of the living room there was already a bookshelf that we kept. We made another one in the opposite corner. Custom designed, it can accommodate a TV. We brought personality to the room through the face of these bookshelves. The old one is quite geometric with more or less large niches, and the new one, with higher and wider shelves, is all rounded, more sensual. On the floor, the tiles have been replaced with a beautiful Hungarian parquet. Ultimately, we did little to this room which, with its beautiful windows and its volumes, already had a lot of character. »

Blue children’s room with bathroom

Before: basic children’s bedroom.
Studio Castile

After: A beautifully remodeled children’s bedroom with optimized storage.
Cassandra Favaro

After: a small bathroom equipped in the recess of the blue children’s room.
Cassandra Favaro

“This room already existed. It is located behind the back wall of the kitchen. It is accessed through a corridor, to the left of the entrance, which leads to the children’s sleeping area, which can be closed with a door to preserve peace. What’s new in this room: a very small bathroom with a shower and sink. We placed it in a small existing recess. Enter through the sliding door: a technical choice that also saves space. The rest of our work is focused on providing functionality, charm and light. We used another recess to create an upper cabinet and another lower one to serve as a wardrobe and storage area for toys. The striped wallpaper above the wardrobe echoes the blue color. The whole thing is calm and practical. »

Green bathroom

Before: a really dated bathroom.
Studio Castile

After: a bathroom where you can hang out.
Cassandra Favaro

“In the left part of the apartment there is another children’s room and another bathroom, but independent. She was very sad and messed up. We have completely redesigned it. So if we kept the location of the bathtub, but we moved it back because it was poorly oriented at first, which made it difficult to use. We have also optimized storage, with a compact cabinet and the creation of a tall column. Our clients also wanted this bathroom to be green, a color that brings energy here. »

Parents’ floor

Before: one bedroom and too many functions.
Studio Castile

After: soft colors, redesigned storage for more peace of mind.
Cassandra Favaro

Before: a stand-alone but impractical shower cubicle that will become a large closet.
Studio Castile

After: a cozy 3 m² bathroom adjoining the master bedroom created by cutting a table that was too big.
Cassandra Favaro

“In the beginning, the second level was complicated. There was no master suite, but a bedroom and a separate shower room. The office was huge. There were also a lot of technical covers that we played with. We kept the office, but took some space above it to create a 3m² bathroom with double sinks and shower accessed from the bedroom. We tried to make it very cozy with wooden furniture, texture effects like wavy tiles, brass faucets that add a precious touch. The former small bathroom has become a large closet. In the 17 m² bedroom, the duct boxes have become alcoves and recesses of open shelves and provide a very decorative side. It is a very cozy and bright room with a large bay window. The peach color that adorns one of the walls brings softness.
