Schools, colleges, secondary schools. The anger of the teacher does not subside. At the end of the inter-union meeting organized on Friday, February 2, 2024, several unions once again call the workers to strike, this Tuesday, February 6, after the mobilization on Thursday, February 1.
What are the requirements, what is the impact on students? We keep an inventory.
The new minister “without legitimacy” and “lit the gunpowder”
Wages, working conditions, the defense of public schools and the furor over the controversies of the new minister of national education, Amélie Oudéa-Casterathe requirements are numerous.
The Sud Education union wants to succeed on “the day of February 1”, “successful, with more than one in two employees on strike”, according to a press release. In particular, he believes that the new minister “has no legitimacy” and that she “must comply with the demands immediately”.
He justifies this new action with the “class contempt of the minister” who “lit the gunpowder”.
“Staff are demanding an immediate pay rise, significant funding for a school for all and for priority education, AESH (disabled student supporter) status and the abandonment of the 'Shock' knowledge reform” and career path reform, the union said.
We are at a tipping point for public schools. This requires a strong response that requires long-term action. One day of strike will not be enough to win.
Trade union CGT éduc'action
The union CGT éduc'action goes further, wanting to be part of the “long-term action plan”. On the menu: “a week of action until February 9 (gatherings at departmental and academic bodies) and the launch of an inter-union petition demanding the abandonment of the “Knowledge Shock” measures.

Why the “conflict of knowledge” divides
During his speech at the National Library of France, on October 5, 2023, Gabriel Attal, then Minister of National Education and Youth, announced his desire to implement a “Knowledge Shock” to “raise the level of schooling”.
Measures presented at a press conference in early December. The project plans to “better support teachers to lead the battle for knowledge”. Goal? Put the “basic knowledge” back at the center of learning in primary school: reading, writing and even arithmetic.
This “Knowledge Shock” enables faster learning of fractions and decimal numbers, especially in elementary school. All French and math programs from Kindergarten to 6th grade will be revised. Level groups will be created for high school French and math.
Level groups that do not pass, for many unions, who see it as “social sorting from an early age”. This “clash of knowledge” will be “violent and unfair to the students, especially the most fragile, brutal and authoritarian to the staff,” especially the FSU judges.
“It is necessary to maintain mobilization during rest zones”
“It is necessary to maintain mobilization during rest zones,” adds FSU-SNUipp.
The Ministry of Education recorded on Thursday, February 1, 20.26 percent of teachers on strike. In more detail, the Ministry recorded 20 percent of strikers in primary schools, 29 percent in secondary schools, 8 percent in general and technical gymnasiums, and 12 percent in vocational secondary schools. Unions announced 40 percent strike action among primary school teachers and 47 percent in middle and high schools.
There is no obligation to declare a strike for second-level staff
Your child goes to primary school (nursery or primary) and his teacher is on strike? In this case, your child must be welcome during class, even if his teacher is absent. The place of admission depends on the number of teachers on strike. If less than 25% of the teachers declare a strike, the children are welcome in their school.
If less than 25% of school teachers say they intend to strike, the state will provide care for your child. If the strike affects 25% or more of the teachers, this reception service is returned to your municipality.
Ministry of Education
If there are more of them, it is the municipality that determines the place of acceptance of the children. Admission can then take place at the school, whether it is closed or partially open.
But children can also be welcomed in other areas in the municipality (gymnasium, recreation center, multi-purpose room, etc.).
If there is an obligation for school teachers to declare a strike 48 hours before the start of the strike, this obligation does not apply to secondary school staff (middle and high schools), nor to AEd (educational assistants). ) as AESH (supporters of students with disabilities), CPE (senior education advisers) or even PSY-EN (psychologists).
